However, we would not recommend Salsa as your first dance. Indeed:
- Salsa is a faster pace dance. Which gives you less time to think and prepare your lead/ Follow and dance moves.
- There is a lot of instruments playing simultaneously, making it harder for you to understand and catch the beat and rhythm at first
- If you a re coming from a western country, and you are not used to listen to salsa music, music will feel like a challenge.
- Lot of Body movements and Afro Caribbean dance and cultures (Like Rumba, and Orishas)
Salsa is also impressive for Latin dance performances
We often train students to perform at latin dance festivals, and we often dance salsa, Salsa Rueda and Rueda de Casino for our performances, because they are fun and energetic dances that can attract the crowd attention. Salsa Music For Dancing
Latin Dance Style: Kizomba
What is Kizomba?
Kizomba is a dance and music genre that originated in Angola in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It is a slow, romantic dance style that is often described as sensual and intimate.
Kizomba music is characterized by a slow and steady beat, with an emphasis on melody and vocals. The music often features a mix of African rhythms, Portuguese folk music, and Caribbean zouk.
In recent years, kizomba has gained popularity around the world, particularly in Europe and other parts of Africa. Kizomba festivals and dance events are now held in many countries, where dancers can come together to learn, socialize, and enjoy the music.
Kizomba is typically danced with a partner in a close embrace, with a focus on the connection between the dancers. The dance is often described as a conversation between the partners, with one leading and the other following. While kizomba is often associated with romance, it can also be danced in a more playful and lighthearted way.
Should I start learning Kizomba as my first dance?
Short answer: No.
Kizomba is a slower pace dance than bachata, which is great for learning! However there is couple of disadvantages:
- Kizomba is a close dance. It can be uncomfortable for you to dance close to a stranger at first as your first dance experience.
- Kizomba also requires a good lead and follow skills. Because you dance so close to your partner, your lead and follow need to be even better, because you have less rooms for mistakes and correct them!
- Finally, Kizomba use a lot of hips movements which can be challenging too!
We would not recommend you to start with Kizomba as your first dance! However, the beat is easier to understand, and it is more of a one two one two step. We would recommend you to listen to the music and see if the music calls you!
Lattin Dance Style: Merengue
What is Merengue?
Merengue is a lively dance and music genre that originated in the Dominican Republic. It is characterized by a fast, upbeat rhythm that is typically played with a tambora (a type of drum), guira (a metal scraper), and accordion.

Merengue has become a popular dance style in many Latin American countries and is enjoyed by people of all ages. It is often danced at parties, clubs, and other social events, and is known for its festive and energetic atmosphere.
In addition to being a dance style, merengue is also a form of music that has influenced many other genres, including salsa, bachata, and reggaeton. Merengue music is known for its catchy melodies, upbeat rhythms, and often humorous lyrics.
Is Merengue the best Latin Dance to learn?
Merengue is considered to be the easiest dance to learn. However, we don’t think it is the easiest due to the following :
- Merengue can be a fast dance, and to dance it properly, you need to learn body movement and hips movements. Those moves are not the easiest to get.
- Merengue is fun, but not as popular in latin dance festivals. There is maybe one merengue out of 5hours of salsa and bachata music.
- Finally, merengue is easier to learn if you learned salsa or bachata prior to that. But this like any other dance will be challenging to learn at first. And the fact that it is not danced much compare to the other dances, it means you will struggle to practice and get better faster. While it will also not help you to socialise easier.
In Conclusion, we would not recommend Merengue as your first latin dance. It might seems easy, but it is not the easiest to learn due to the body movement and the lack of festivals and events showcasing Merengue. It will make it harder and longer for you to learn and practice this dance.
